What Inspired Me to Open This Home
My journey has not been an easy one — but it has been filled with lessons, grace, and second chances.
I grew up facing challenges that most people could never imagine. My parents struggled with addiction, and from a young age I found myself trying to take care of both myself and my sister. Eventually, the State of Georgia took custody of us. Becoming a ward of the state was one of the hardest experiences of my life — but it was also the turning point that changed my future.
Through the support, structure, and opportunities I received, I learned discipline, faith, and resilience. I graduated at the top of my class, earning a 3.8 GPA. For the first time, I felt proud of myself and could see a future beyond survival. Even though my family once told me I would never amount to anything, that experience proved to me that I could rise above my circumstances.
After graduation, I was blessed with a full scholarship — but I chose to give it up so that my sister could attend Savannah State University. That decision was my first chance to give back. For a while, I stayed on a straight and narrow path. But life brought new challenges. As I started having children of my own, I wanted to give them everything I never had — and that led me down some wrong roads and risky choices.
Still, life — and God — were not done with me. The universe gave me another chance. I was blessed beyond measure with peace, redemption, and a new purpose.
That’s when I understood what God had been doing all along: shaping me to help others find the same grace and direction that saved me.
Now, through this group home, I want to give back what was once given to me — guidance, structure, love, and hope. My mission is to show young adult that no matter where they start, their past does not define their future. Everyone deserves a second chance, and sometimes, a helping hand is all it takes to see the light within themselves.
